Rope by Patrick Hamilton

What do you do for fun?

Go out for a meal? Go see a band? Murder?

For the mere sake of adventure, danger, and the “fun of the thing,” Wyndham Brandon persuades his weak-minded friend, Charles Granillo, to assist him in the murder of their mutual friend, a perfectly harmless man named Ronald Raglan. They place the body in a wooden chest and, to add spice to the situation, they invite a few acquaintances- including the dead youth’s father, to a party.

The chest with its gruesome contents, serves as a supper table and the centrepiece. Will they get away with it? Will their hideous crime be uncovered? Or will they crumble under the pressure of their own guilt?

Have they provided enough Rope to hang themselves with?

Rope was first presented by The Repertory Players in a Sunday night try-out production at the Strand Theatre, London, on 3 March 1929. The following month the play opened in the West End at the Ambassadors Theatre on 25 April 1929.

Rope is widely regarded as a significant play of its era and has earned the title of a "forgotten classic". Its popularity and enduring appeal has resulted in various adaptations over the years, most famously the Hitchcock film adaptation, which have solidified its place in theatrical history.
